Central railways will take action to prevent flooding at tracks

Microtunneling work will be carried out across railway lines at Kurla and Chunabhatti railway stations to prevent waterlogging on railway tracks during the monsoon season on the Central Railway.

At Kurla and Chunabhatti railway stations, a pipe will be installed over the tracks to prevent rainwater from flooding the tracks.

Reinforced Concrete (RCC) pipes will be connected to the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) pipelines to finish the project. Stormwater will be channelled through these freshly installed Reinforced Concrete (RCC) pipes, which will prevent floods.

The overflowing Mithi river floods the railway tracks in Kurla, Sion, and Chunabhatti every year, disrupting local train services.

"We will carry out the microtunneling operation to prevent flooding on the railway tracks," said the company. A top Central Railway official stated, "It would be completed before the monsoon."

Microtunneling work was also carried out at Masjid Bunder railway station, using RCC pipes with a diameter of 1000 mm.

Flooding gates will be installed at strategic points to prevent water from entering the railway tracks. In the coming week, railway authorities will meet with officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to discuss monsoon readiness.

Due to waterlogging on suburban railway tracks during the 2021 monsoon, Central Railway local train services were suspended for about 15 hours in June.
