Tea from Assam was auctioned off at a record price

Officials said a special tea from Assam's Dibrugarh district was auctioned on Monday for Rs 99,999 per kg, a record price for such a high-end variety of the commodity from the state for the second time in two months.

AFT Techno Trade's Golden Pearl tea was auctioned off at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC).

"Assam Tea Traders paid 99,999 for one kilogramme of the specialty tea," GTAC Secretary Priyanuz Dutta told PTI.

According to Tea Association of India's Assam unit Secretary Dipanjol Deka, the handmade delicate type of the tea was grown at Nahorchukbari in Lahowal, near the Dibrugarh airport.

"At the auction, the unique variety was presented in sale number 7 and lot number 5001 of the day," he said.

On December 14, last year, the GTAC auctioned 'Manohari Gold' from the Manohari tea plantation for 99,999 per kg.

According to the official, this was the highest amount ever paid at a tea auction in the country.

'Golden Needle,' produced by Donyi Polo Tea Estate in Arunachal Pradesh, and 'Golden Butterfly,' produced by Dikom Tea Garden in Assam, were auctioned at 75,000 per kg in separate auctions in August 2021.

'Manohari Gold Tea' was auctioned at the GTAC in July 2019 for 50,000 per kg, which was the highest auction value at the moment.
