China to build a Nuclear Reactor Power Plant in Argentina Just under the nose of USA

The Chinese government will build a nuclear power plant in Argentina in addition to joining President Xi's flagship Belt and Road Initiative(BRI).

The arrangement stipulates that China will construct the Atucha III nuclear power plant utilizing Hualong One technology at a cost of $8 billion. Argentina's President Alberto Fernandez visited China earlier this month to attend the Beijing Winter Olympics and signed an MoU on the BRI project.

During their discussion, Xi and Fernandez discussed how to go forward with hydroelectric and railway projects as China strives to strengthen economic connections with Latin America.

Argentina attempted to reach a nuclear agreement with China in 2015 under the administration of former President Cristina Fernandez, who is now the country's vice president. The new nuclear power station is planned to produce up to 1,200 MW of electricity.

Hualong, China One technology is said to compete with the Evolutionary Pressurised Reactor (EPR) technology developed by Westinghouse in the United States and Europe. Fujian, China, had pioneered the technology. It had previously reached an agreement with Pakistan to construct a nuclear power facility in the nation.

After Pakistan, Argentina is the second international arena for China's Hualong One technology.

With May of last year, China assisted in the commissioning of Pakistan's largest nuclear power plant in the port city of Karachi, as Prime Minister Imran Khan noted that Pakistan is among the top ten countries most vulnerable to climate change.

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) began work on Pakistan's nuclear power facility in 2015. Pakistan's Belt and Road plan has already received billions of dollars from China.

China's nuclear reactor design, which might be utilised in a project in southeast England, was approved by the UK last week.
