Colombian homes buried by deadly landslide




According to Officials, the landslide induced by heavy rains has killed at least 14 people in central Colombia.


Several homes were destroyed in the Dosquebradas municipality, Risaralda province, on Tuesday, injuring another 35 people.

 

Officials released a picture showing a gash in the lush foliage on the mountainside.

Other residents who live near a swollen river have been relocated to safer ground.


According to Colombia's emergency management experts, rescue crews have been searching the muck for more survivors.


"We were startled by a resounding noise. We went outside and saw a portion of the mountain perched over the houses "The AFP news agency quoted cab driver Dubernei Hernandez.

The death toll is expected to rise further.

In Colombia, landslides are prevalent, and residences built on steep hillsides are especially vulnerable during the rainy season.

A landslide in the south-western Cauca province killed at least 28 persons in 2019.

More than 250 people were murdered in a landslide in Mocoa, in the southern province of Putumayo, two years ago.
